| Pilates movement and core stability programmes at the Myofascial Release Clinic |
Pilates method training Pilates training at the Myofascial Release Clinic focuses first on developing core stability and awakening, aligning and balancing the postural muscles, reestablishing the correct balance between different muscle groups, strengthening some muscles and releasing others. The method is particularly effective in creating strength and stability of the spinal muscles and the pelvic girdle, the group of muscles which wrap around the stomach, hips and lower back like a corset. These muscles give protection and support for the lumbar spine and affect the way the rest of the body is held. When they are weak or imbalanced this can cause back, hip and leg problems. ![]() Mind-body integration The initial work is in making neurological, mind-body connections between awareness of required posture, alignment or movements and the muscles themselves. Sometimes the pathways between brain or spinal cord and muscles have not been established or have been in disuse for some time, so new patterns have to be established. This can feel 'odd' or awkward in the beginning, but these patterns soon become second nature and are integrated into unconscious movement patterns. This brings natural ease and fluidity of movement without pain or misalignment. As neurological connections are established and muscles become stronger, the musculoskeletal system is able to release and disengage muscles which had been compensating for disfunctional muscles. This results in a 'lengthening' of the whole body, an easing of the joints and true flexibility based on strength rather than distortion of the joints. In learning Pilates, students learn how to recruit the correct muscles for each movement and posture, in the right order, starting with the core muscles and moving through to mobilising muscles. Although this is learned consciously and deliberately, the learning is soon integrated and correct muscle recruitment occurs in the split second it takes to undertake a daily movement unconsciously. Who can do Pilates? The exercises are very simple, fun, and can be learned by complete beginners. As each person is an individual, postural patterns and patterns of stiffness and ease, balance and imbalance, will be different from person to person. In mat classes, exercises are selected for the individuals in the class - there is no 'one size fits all' syndrome. As your strength develops, the exercises get harder - they can be extremely challenging! Learning the Pilates based exercises brings a toned, strong, supple body and heightened mind-body awareness. Pilates and rehabilitation from injury or illness Core stability exercise can be very helpful in regaining strength and flexibility after injuries or trauma. The exercises may also be combined with Myofascial Release for greatest effect. We can design a programme for you to help you on the road to recovery - please ask. One-to-ones and mat classes
