| Mind-Body approaches to Trauma at the Myofascial Release Clinic. Treatment for PTSD, anxiety and panic attacks based on Peter Levine's Somatic Experiencing work. Clinics in London W1 and Edinburgh, UK. |
Anne Cruickshank, SEP, is a graduate in Peter Levine's Somatic Experiencing training and works one-to-one with those suffering from post traumatic stress disorder, prolonged duration stress disorder and other conditions in which their mind-body has suffered overwhelm and cannot regulate itself effectively any more. What do our Mind-Body approaches to Trauma do? We use a variety of mind-body approaches based on Somatic Experiencing, to help normalise physiological responses to trauma and stress, whether these are from one-off events, such as accidents or attacks possibly triggering Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, or from constant, unremitting stress which can result in Prolonged Duration Stress Disorder. Symptoms may include the following:
Mind-Body approaches to Trauma are based on research into psycho-neuro-endocrino-immunology, the science about how our experiences are encoded neurologically and physiologically and how this affects our thinking and our responses to emotional or stress-related challenges. Our immune and hormonal systems are also affected by our neurological encoding of our experiences, particularly stressful ones. Stress is defined as any situation in which the overall demands on your system outweigh your overall resources over a given time frame - too much, too fast, or gradual overwhelm. Stressful experiences are those in which you do not have sufficient resources to respond effectively, and your efforts to deal with stress become less and less effective as you fatigue. In Mind-Body approaches to Trauma we focus on your autonomic nervous system response to stress or trauma. In cases of trauma or prolonged duration stress, the self-regulation capacity of the autonomic nervous system may be disturbed, resulting in a 'normal' setting which is hypersensitive, unresponsive or erratic. Trauma and stress are not only experienced in the brain but in the whole body. Through tracking the visible and felt sense of your autonomic nervous system response to stressful situations, for example, noting what happens in the body when you are anxious, and allowing the autonomic nervous system to complete necessary physiological responses such as heat discharge, trembling, etc. we can gently enter the autonomic nervous system's hardwiring and bring about fundamental changes to the way you are able to respond consciously and unconsciously to stressful situations. Individual sessions at the clinic with Anne Cruickshank SEP consist of the following. Sessions should be weekly to fortnightly, to maximise effectiveness. Gentle, calm exercises to track responses in the body and re-regulate the autonomic nervous system so that responses to triggers are normalised and integrated into the whole body, creating a new and healthy 'normal' setting for the nervous system. It is not necessary for you to know what caused your symptoms, or necessarily to talk about known causes or traumatic events during the sessions. Mind-body approaches to stress and trauma at the Myofascial Release Clinic focus on your physiological responses to stress and trauma, such as anxiety, panic attacks, breathing problems, tearfulness, sleep problems or any of the symptoms mentioned above. Our goal is to lessen these or eliminate them entirely, re-setting your autonomic nervous system and physiology so that your system has a new, healthy 'normal' setting.
